Day 1 – Depart Yuma at 6:00 am and enjoy the ride, with a breakfast stop in Gila Bend, and an additional comfort stop north of Phoenix.
Arrive at the train station in Clarksdale, around noon. Use your voucher to order lunch (see details below). Board the Verde Canyon Railroad, destination the ghost town of Perkinsville. The round trip train excursion will take 4 hours. The train rolls past towering, crimson cliffs close to ancient Indian ruins, over old-fashioned trestles and through a 680-foot tunnel. The historic route follows the Upper Verde River, a lush riparian habitat blessed with astonishing beauty. The area is not accessible by automobile. The Verde Canyon, often referred to as “Arizona’s Other Grand Canyon”, unfolds with spectacular and colorful geology. The naturally chiseled rock formations named after their likenesses – elephant rock, Whistler’s Mother, Budweiser frogs and Dave’s guardian angel – entertain passengers thirsty for whimsy. “Turtle Rock,” with his head, shell and little turtle tail, is remembered by passengers traveling the Canyon in the 1920s to have had the same namesake. Step out onto the open air car to get fantastic views of the extraordinary scenery. An attendant shares knowledge and answers your questions. Don’t forget your camera. Each enclosed car has an informed guide giving expert narration. Cars have rest rooms and are climate-controlled.
Lunch from Copper Spike Cafe, at the train depot, is included. You may eat prior to boarding, or take your lunch on board the train.
